The Results Are In: Earrings Have Dominated the Red Carpet

The Academy Awards have ended but the discussion on fashion has only just started.

The dominant feature of the night was diamonds and fine jewellery. Kristen Mandel, Idina Menzel and Naomi Watts all wore diamond statement necklaces. However, most of the celebrities were adorned in diamond earrings as their only accessory. For example, Angelina Jolie wore a simple pair of drop diamond earrings with no necklace. The diamond ear cuff worn by both Sandra Bullock and Lupita Nyong'o caught all kinds of attention from the fashion world. This look was different, edgy and yet elegant.

One of the most memorable jewellery choices of the night was the earrings worn by Academy nominee Amy Adams (CBC, 2014). She said she was not going with a stylists’ help with her look, as she wanted to dress for herself. The way she accessorized with focal earrings was outstanding. Their striking red teardrop centres were possibly framed in sapphires and diamonds. These statement earrings seemed to not match her navy gown. However, they definitely completed her look by drawing attention straight to her rose lips and blue eyes. We will have to wait to see if coordinating lipstick with earring colour catches on as a fashion trend. My prediction is that it will be a definite style to watch for in the formal wear season this summer.

But, not all jewellery designers have diamonds and sapphires at their disposal. Therefore, we will look at the silhouettes of these popular pieces and determine what can be used to inspire new designs.

The classic look achieved by diamonds can be mirrored by using crystals in jewellery. This inexpensive alternative can allow you to recreate some of the Red Carpet trends for your inventory. For instance, the ear cuff worn by Lupita Nyong’o can be created by pairing clear crystals in a cluster, with a clip-on earring back. The popular look of diamond drop earrings worn by many of the stars, has the basic element of a dangling hexagon. This silhouette is easily achieved by coupling a crystal track with a single drilled hexagon crystal. Using only the basic elements of these designs, the patterns can be recreated with minimal expense.
